The 3 questions everyone asks first

Can I explore this if I rent?

Yes. You don't need to own a home to explore a consumer proposal. We'll review your circumstances to see whether it fits.

    What happens to my credit?

A proposal shows on your credit report while you're paying and for a few years after. If you're already behind, your credit may be taking a hit right now anyway.

    What does it cost?

No upfront fees. Trustee fees are set by federal rules and come out of your proposal payments.

You don't need to know the answer.
That's what the free consultation is for.

    How a consumer proposal works

Your trustee makes a legally binding offer to your creditors to repay part of what you owe, over up to five years. Creditors have 45 days to respond. Once it's filed, you stop paying them and make one monthly payment to your trustee. When you finish, the rest of the debt is gone.

It's available if your total unsecured debt is under $250,000, not counting a mortgage. We handle consumer proposals and bankruptcies. We don't offer consolidation loans or debt management plans.

    Wipe out debt from:

    Credit cards
    Personal loans
    Payday loans
    CRA tax debt
    Lines of credit
    Collection accounts
    Car deficiency
    Government debt
    Utility bills

Mortgages and car loans are treated differently. Recent student loans, support payments and court fines can't be included.

    Before you start

    Clear answers before you begin

Will I lose my house or car?

No. You keep them as long as you keep up those payments.

    Is this bankruptcy?

No. A consumer proposal is the legal alternative to bankruptcy.

Will collectors keep coming after me?

Once your proposal is filed, collection calls, wage garnishments and lawsuits on included debts stop.

    How much would I pay?

It depends on your income and assets. Many people pay back a fraction of what they owe, up to 80% less.* Your assessment shows you where you stand.

    Will this affect my credit?

Starting the assessment doesn't. If you file, we'll explain exactly how before you decide.

    Is this a government program?

No, and be careful with anyone who says it is. It's a legal process under federal law, run by a federally licensed trustee.

    Is it confidential?

Yes. Your assessment is private, and nothing is filed unless you say so.

You don't have to decide today. But you should find out.
